These stars persist

by Gerald Farinas

Even in the growing dimmer,

the tarnish,

the corroding rot,

the guff of its unsound captains and counsellors,

the tragic sorrowing of the people they failed,

there is an enduring longing,

confident aspiration in the same promises

that set those stars ablaze,

impressing hopes along that lakefront cityscape:

these stars will remain,

these stars will persist,

these stars will burn

because the people said,

“I will fight for my home.”
